Toskana Landschaft Hügel um Volterra beim Ferienhaus

Lovely countryside of Tuscany

The holiday home Podere Palazzone is situated in the middle of typical Tuscan countryside, on the edge of a hill at 370 meters. It is located in the municipality of Pomarance, 1 km outside the town, at the border of an isolated agricultural road. On one hand, it is surrounded by natural mixed forests with large oaks, evergreen holm oaks, chestnuts and acacias. On the other hand, there is agriculture, characterised by exclusively organic farms. Indeed, in our corner of Tuscany, all farming is done on small fields, far away from any monoculture. Small olive groves alternate with a few rows of vines. In between are fields of grain where durum wheat grows for pasta production. In spring, young grain bathes the countryside in a vibrant green, often peppered with the bright red of poppies. Afterwards, the stalks turn pastel green and offer a lively spectacle of colour as they sway in the wind. Slowly, they become shiny gold and later beige. Until finally, after the harvest, the characteristic round bales sprout like mushrooms from the ground. Tuscany countryside in its most typical appearance. Now and then, sunflowers adorn the fields in the river valley, with the blue blossoms of the wild radicchio in between.

Mediterranean Macchia of Italy

The steeper hills around our Agriturismo are used as grassland for hay production. It is particularly aromatic, because our grasslands are natural meadows with a high proportion of wild herbs. Many areas also remain fallow and are used as pasture for sheep farming. This is why, in Tuscany we produce an excellent pecorino. The typical trees and bushes of Mediterranean maquis, such as mirto, juniper and corbezzolo, complete the picture. The latter is Italy’s tricolour tree, green-white-red like our national flag. It bears green leaves, white flowers and red fruits at the same time. Of course, there are the pini marittimi with their flat crown and the pointed typical cypresses. They adorn alleys and isolated farmsteads, turning the countryside of Tuscany into a piece of art.

Most magnificent Tuscan landscape

Looking north from Holiday Home Podere Palazzone, you see the enchanting Etruscan city of Volterra and the upper Cecina valley. The hill to the west houses the town centre of Pomarance. A little further, are the picturesque villages of Libbiano and Micciano. Instead, the east is occupied by the huge Nature Park Foresta di Berignone. Within sight, the majestic fortified castle of Rocca di Sillano is watching over us since the 12th century. And again, to the south, behind our olive grove, the Cornate Nature Park looms in the distance with its highest elevation of 1059 meters. Finally, just behind our Agriturismo, a narrow, winding road leads through a picturesque landscape down to the river with its very own natural spectacles. Here you will find deep gorges, whimsical rocks and rivers, where you can take a refreshing natural bath.
