Visit authentic Tuscany / Italy in summer

The nightly call of owls heralds the beginning of summer holidays in our corner of Italy. Now, the amazing infinity pool becomes the centre of holiday at Agriturismo Podere Palazzone. It is nicely nestled in the beautiful landscape of the Alta Valta di Cecina. While children adore splashing around in the water, adults use it for swimming or relaxing on their air mattress. In the evening, when the lights of the Etruscan city of Volterra are reflected on the water surface, romantics go into raptures.

Summer colours of Tuscany

In summer, the green of wheat fields turns into a dull grey-green, into a fiery gold and finally into a dull beige. What a beautiful sight, when the stalks sway harmoniously back and forth with every breeze so that the hills seem to be alive. The grain harvest in Italy starts pretty early, around beginning of summer. Then, countryside is turned into one of the most classic Tuscany pictures: Round bales on golden fields, in front of a rustico, a few cypresses and rolling hills. Afterwards, fields of sunflowers add colour to the landscape. How about a pizza picnic in the field while enjoying this panorama? The garden of our holiday home during summer smells of typical Mediterranean maquis, of helichrysum, rosemary and pine trees. At night, fireflies turn the ground into a starry sky and the gentle concert of crickets looking for a bride convey peace with oneself and the world. Some guests of our Agriturismo use their vacation to search for constellations in the clear sky. Indeed, in our countryside it has a particularly low light contamination. We would be happy to show you a few of them.

Under the Tuscan sun

Resting during daytime, party at night. That is the maxim of most summer guests at holiday home Podere Palazzone. Here in Italy, the thermometer sometimes climbs to 30°C and slightly above in summer. However, thanks to the low humidity at our place, this is a very pleasant temperature. Also, on the hill of our Agriturismo there is always a nice light breeze. Therefore, sports activities are usually carried out in the morning hours and late afternoon. Hikes in fresh Leccio woods can be wonderfully combined with discovering Etruscan burial chambers, abandoned mines and medieval ruins. Bathing fun is on the agenda, whether in the pool in front of the holiday home, in the river of the Foresta di Berignone nature park or in the sea. And finally, after a visit to some of Italy’s most beautiful beaches, a delicious dinner on the piazza is on everybody’s to do list.

Art of living

Especially in summer, smaller towns are the best option to get to know authentic Italy. Because that’s where you’ll find the lesser known, but all the more beautiful sights. In addition, this is where you best enjoy true Italian hospitality. The warm nights of Tuscany are often illuminated by a variety of sagre and medieval festivals. Furthermore, every Wednesday evening in summer, the village center of Pomarance is all about market stalls with local specialties, music and dancing.

The cheerful mood and the lightness of summer are also reflected in our restaurant. In summer, the focus is on fresh tomatoes and organic vegetables from the garden. Indeed, the kitchen of our Agriturismo serves light pasta dishes and refreshing main dishes, whether meat or vegetarian. And of course, ice cream. Summer is the time to boil down tomato sauce, straight from the bush to the jar, so to speak. Furthermore, at the edges of surrounding meadows we collect wild fennel seeds. As summer draws to a close, delicious green figs ripen in front of the holiday home and bright yellow autumn crocuses start sprouting. In Pomarance, calendar summer ends with drumming and medieval flag-wavers during the Palio delle Contrade.
